A Message from the Minister

Minister Mick Murray

Hon Mick Murray MLA

Minister for Seniors and Ageing

My wish for all Western Australians is to live a long, happy and healthy life. While most older Western Australians age safely and independently, an increasing number are vulnerable to elder abuse.

In Western Australia (WA), elder abuse is defined as 'any act which causes harm to an older person and occurs within an informal relationship of trust, such as family or friends'.

Its impact is significant in our community and has profound effects on the emotional, psychological, physical and financial health of victims, their families and kin.

The State Government is strategically determining what actions are needed to prevent and respond to elder abuse. To achieve this, we are developing the WA Strategy to Respond to the Abuse of Older People (Elder Abuse).

The ten-year strategy will be a blueprint for the priorities, actions and outcomes required to effectively tackle elder abuse in WA. It will also contribute to implementation of the National Plan to Respond to the Abuse of Older Australians.

All Western Australians have a role to play in preventing the abuse of older people. I encourage you to help shape the strategy by reading the draft WA Strategy to Respond to the Abuse of Older People (Elder Abuse) that was released on 15 June 2019, and then provide your feedback.
