Encouraging women to pursue careers in the traditionally male dominated science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) fields is a focus for the Department of Communities at this weekend’s Skills West Expo.

The Department, in partnership with TradeUP Australia, will have a stall at this weekend's expo promoting the benefits of careers in STEM fields and trades. The stall will feature live demonstrations where visitors can try their hand at different trades under the supervision of female tradespeople. TradeUP volunteers and Department staff will also be on hand to offer advice about careers in the STEM and trades fields.

Hosting the stall is part of the Department’s commitment to support women’s economic independence while working to create broader career opportunities for women.

More than 8000 people are expected to attend the event, which enables visitors to explore tertiary and vocational career and training options, apprenticeships and find new career pathways.

The expo runs from 18-20 August at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre and is free to attend.
