24 February marks the National Day to commemorate the role of War Animals in Australia.

Animals such as horses, dogs, pigeons, camels and donkeys have played a vital role in war, performing a range of important and often dangerous tasks including carrying people and equipment, as mascots and friends and serving as messengers.

Today, dogs are the primary war animal serving in areas such as explosive search and guard roles with the Engineers, Military Police and the RAAF.
