Grandparents caring for their grandchildren will be further supported following an evaluation of the grandparent carer support services that are funded by the Department of Communities. Currently Communities provides nearly $600,000 annually to Wanslea Family Services Incorporated to deliver a suite of three programs to support grandparents raising their grandchildren.

The evaluation identified that the services provided are well utilised by nearly 4,000 of WA’s grandparent carers; with many needing financial support and peer social activities; and suggested improvements to include greater service provision in regional areas and an increased focus on respite options.

Minister for Child Protection; Community Services, the Hon Simone McGurk MLA, has expressed an interest in the State Government expanding supports to grandparents and the grandchildren in their care, with consideration of more grandfamily-centred approaches applied to future funded services.

Grandparent carers make valuable contributions to the lives of their grandchildren, in many cases taking on a full time parenting role rather than the grandchildren entering the care of the State Government.

A future service package for grandparent carers is now being developed.
