The Department of Communities (Communities) has achieved Disability Confident Recruiter (DCR) status, the second public sector agency in Western Australia to do so, by completing a rigorous 12-month program administered through the Australian Network on Disability.

The DCR status acknowledges the changes Communities has made to ensure that recruitment processes and practices are inclusive for people with disability.

Having access to appropriate adjustments when applying for positions enables people with disability to fully participate in recruitment, selection and appointment activities – creating a more inclusive and equitable process. For example, an adjustment may be offering flexible and alternative options to a traditional panel interview.

Enabling skilled jobseekers with disability to compete for positions on a level playing field increases the talent pool and benefits everyone. The goal is to provide an equitable experience for all applicants.

The attraction, retention and development of people with disability is a priority area for Communities.

In December 2019, the State Government announced an action plan to make the WA public sector a leader in the employment of people with disability, with a target of five per cent (workforce representation) by the end of 2025. By achieving the DCR, Communities has made an important step towards reaching that target.
