Been awhile since you picked up a pencil? Artist Rachael Lemon says studying art in your local area could reinvigorate your creativity

This Seniors Week, local artist and Baldivis resident Rachael Lemon will take participants on a guided walk through the Mary Davies Library and Community Centre and surrounding landscape in search of beautiful textures, sculptures and design.

Once inspired, Rachael will then work with participants to create a sketch drawing of their own.

City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Samuels, said the Artist Walk was a great way for seniors to learn new skills.

“The event offers seniors a fantastic opportunity to express their creative talents through drawing and also gives participants a chance to form new connections with likeminded people in a friendly, welcoming environment.

“With added support and guidance from Rachael, seniors will also be given valuable tips to help with drawing their sketches. Better still, seniors will be able to take these newfound skills and knowledge home with them and apply it to any other creative work they may be inspired to do.”

Artist Rachael Lemon says that art has a number of benefits for seniors.

“Making marks with an array of inexpensive art materials can help to maintain hand dexterity, aid in relaxation and at the same time provides a whole range of sensory stimulation.

“More importantly though, making art can encourage playfulness and is definitely a tool for having fun.”

The City of Rockingham Art Walk is sponsored by the Department of Communities and Lotterywest through the 2018 Seniors Week Community Grants Program.

The Seniors Week Community Grants Program supports events with a focus on building skills and learning new things later in life – an important component of healthy and active ageing.
