These FAQs help to answer some questions you may have about our Graduate Program.

Who can apply?
Any Australian citizen or permanent resident with a degree from a recognised university who completed their degree within the last two years is eligible to apply.

You can also apply if you have a working visa that entitles you to work full time, for the full period of the graduate program.

When do applications open and close?
Applications for our Graduate Development Program are now open for a February start. The closing date for applications is 20 July 2018.

What type of degree do I need?
We hire graduates from all disciplines. The Department undertakes a diverse range of work and we are looking to recruit a mixture of talented graduates from a broad range of universities and academic backgrounds. Some of our previous graduates’ degrees include commerce, psychology, arts, sociology, sustainability, anthropology, law, project management, urban and regional planning and architecture.

I completed my degree overseas, can I still apply?
If you completed your degree overseas, you will need to have it assessed by the Overseas Qualifications Unit at the Department of Training and Workforce Development for equivalency with Australian qualifications. Degrees must be assessed as being equivalent to at least a 3 year bachelor degree to make you eligible for the graduate program.

What does the Department look for in a graduate?
We encourage applicants for our graduate program from all disciplines. We’re after graduates who:

  • Enjoy a challenge and who work hard to achieve goals
  • Can communicate with a wide range of people in different situations
  • Use initiative to identify problems and develop solutions
  • Can research, analyse and present findings in a concise way.

How many people usually apply?
Our graduate is very competitive; each year we have seen an increase in the number of applicants.

When does the Graduate Development Program commence?
Our graduates generally commence in early February each year.

What training is provided?
You will be exposed to a variety of activities throughout the program. Your first week is dedicated to your induction. After that, we will design a professional development program (PDP) with you that will help you fit into the organization. The PDP is based on your existing skills and experience and can include opportunities such as:

  • In-house formal courses
  • On-the-job training
  • Site visits
  • Public Sector Commission’s Graduate Future Leaders Program (first year)
  • Internal Foundations of Leadership program (second year)
  • Computer based training
  • External seminars and workshops
  • Personal development courses
  • Mentoring
  • Opportunities for regional placements and visits.

What if I am graduating part way through the Graduate Development Program?
We do not have a mid-year intake for our program, our graduates all commence in February together. You can apply in the year that you complete your degree or the year after you complete your degree.

What if I finished my degree more than two years ago?
Unfortunately only applicants who have completed their degree in the last two years are eligible to apply. Even though you’re not eligible for the graduate program, we run recruitment exercises for various other Level 2 and Level 3 positions throughout the year and we encourage you to apply. Look out for our advertisements on Jobs WA.

What kind of rotations can I expect?
Our previous graduates have worked in a variety of areas including Strategy and Policy, Service Delivery, Communications and Marketing, Land and Housing Development, Aboriginal Housing, Legal and Legislative Services, Business Planning and Improvement, Housing Construction, Regional Services Reform Unit, Adoptions, Finance, Business Integration, Commissioning, Communications, and regional placements. Your rotations will also depend on business needs, your careers aspirations/direction and what areas of the organisation are of particular interest to you.

What happens at the end of the Graduate Development Program?
Although there is no guarantee of permanency after the graduate program finishes, graduates are strongly encouraged to apply for positions within the Department. Over 75% of graduates have taken on positions within the Department after their placements. We invest in our graduates and strive to utilise their skills, experience and expertise within the organisation and we can also assist with application and interview preparation.

What kind of career can I expect with the Department?
The Department undertakes a wide range of functions. Graduates can move into a variety of areas including project management, communications, organisational development, finance, economics, acquisitions, investment, aboriginal housing, urban and regional planning and design, policy development, business analysis, contract management and change initiatives.

Will I be required to obtain a National Police Clearance?
Yes, if you are successful a National Police Clearance will need to be provided to the Graduate Coordinator prior to commencement. Previous criminal conviction or pending charges will not necessarily preclude employment.

When do you make offers to the successful applicants?
Offers to successful applicants generally occur mid-late October.

What is the duration of the Graduate Program?
The Graduate Program takes place over two years.

How long has the Graduate Program been running?
Our current Graduate Program has been running since 2010.

What salary range can I expect for this graduate program?
You will be paid a starting salary at PSGOGA Level 3 plus 9.25 per cent superannuation. The PSGOGA Level 3 range as at July 2018 is $69,896. with an increment increase in year two.
