Have your voice heard - A carers self-advocacy handbook

The State Government has launched a new handbook to assist carers in their role and to make sure they have the tools needed to speak up.

Have your voice heard: a carers self-advocacy handbook gives carers practical guidance to cope with often complex situations and issues when dealing with health professionals and service providers. The handbook is intended to help carers effectively self-advocate, communicate assertively, navigate information and services and look after their own wellbeing.

The handbook explores topics such as:

  • Understanding your rights
  • Developing an effective style of communication
  • Managing your emotions
  • Looking after your own health and wellbeing 

It is hoped that the guide will also assists people to identify as a carer.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid personal carer, support and assistance to a person who needs help with daily life. This can be due to disability, impairment, mental illness, chronic condition or terminal illness, an alcohol or drug issue, or being elderly or frail.

The handbook was developed by research and contributions from Western Australian carers, Carers WA, the Carers Advisory Council and other carer organisations.
