In 2016 the Department of Communities commissioned the University of Western Australia to evaluate the Age-friendly Communities Local Government Grants Program.

The Age-friendly Communities Local Government Grants Program provides funding to local governments to improve the quality of life for seniors in Western Australia.

Since 2008, the State Government has provided a total of $673,113 in funding to 75 local governments to assist with age-friendly community planning.

The evaluation found that as a result of the Age-friendly Communities Local Government Grants Program (2006-16) local governments have increased their focus on the ageing population in their area.

In no other Australian jurisdiction have so many local government areas applied the age-friendly lens to their strategic community planning.

A summary of the findings are available in the Successful Planning for Age-friendly Communities in Western Australian summary report.
