With respect to local government rates and emergency services levy on your property, you may be entitled to the following:
- as a Seniors Card holder only - a rebate of up to 25% subject to a maximum amount determined by regulation (for the financial year ending 30 June 2012 this amount is $264.65); or
- as a Seniors Card holder, who also holds a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card - up to 50% rebate or deferment.
The above rebates or deferment are available only to applicants who own or occupy the property as their ordinary place of residence on 1 July of the rate year (includes beneficiaries under deceased estates, who will become the ultimate owner or a life tenant). A proportionate rebate will apply where ownership of the property is shared with anyone other than your spouse.
If you become the holder of a Seniors Card during the year and own and occupy the property as your ordinary place of residence on 1 July of the rate year, you may be eligible for a pro-rata rebate. If you become eligible to hold both a Seniors Card and a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card during the year, you may be eligible for a pro-rata rebate or deferment.
To register your entitlement for a rebate
You may apply for a rebate over the phone by contacting the Water Corporation on telephone 1300 659 951, who conduct a common rebate registration service on behalf of local government and the Corporation for eligible pensioners and seniors.
Alternatively, written applications should be made to your local government on the appropriate form as soon as you become eligible. A registration form can be obtained from the Water Corporation or your local government.
Please note your entitlement to a rebate or deferment will only commence from the date your local government or the Water Corporation receives a completed registration form.
