The Department for Communities recognises Aboriginal ways of bringing up children and builds on these cultural strengths. We work with local communities to help children grow up strong. Our early childhood programs are for Aboriginal families with children of up to five years of age. Torres Strait Islander families are also welcome to attend.

Best Start is family-friendly and flexible, and a program can include:

• playgroups and fun activities for young children and their carers
• nutrition and health education programs
• early language and numeracy skills
• integration into pre-primary programs at school.
