The WA Youth Awards were established in 1999 to recognise outstanding young Western Australians aged 12 to 25 years. They honour the hard work and dedication of young people, youth workers and youth-led groups throughout WA.
In 2012 the WA Youth Awards are proudly presented by the Department for Communities in partnership with the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia. The awards are supported by Lotterywest.
The eight award categories cover a range of fields, including the arts; education; the environment; community service; and sport and recreation.
Winners were announced at the WA Youth Awards gala ceremony on Thursday, 19 April, 2012, during National Youth Week. The 2012 WA Young Person of the Year is 24-year-old Karratha woman Brittany Moxham for her outstanding work with regional young people.
Each category winner received $2 000 and a trophy. The WA Young Person of the Year received a prize of return flights for two to a European destination, courtesy of Singapore Airlines and the Department for Communities - Youth.
Journalists and photographers were also recognised for excellence in reporting on young people and youth issues through the Communicate! 2012 WA Youth Media Awards.
