Welcome to the new DFC from Sue Ellery MLC, Minister for Communities; Women's Interests; Seniors and Volunteering

I am pleased to welcome you to the new Department for Communities at the start of an exciting new chapter in the development of social policy in Western Australia.
The Department will continue to enhance and support the social wellbeing and participation of our key community groups; children and young people, seniors, women, carers, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
These social groups are a vital part of our community structure and their full participation in all aspects of community life is integral to the mission of the Department. They will continue to enjoy a prominent voice and presence within Government.
The Department has a mandate to address the issues that threaten our social fabric, such as family and domestic violence. The Department will also focus on community strengthening through volunteering and community grants and supporting families through parenting programs and childcare regulation.
Early access to quality education and care gives young children a flying start in life and the new Department will co-ordinate a stronger early years strategy.
Building on the strong relationships, support networks and working partnerships with non-government organisations is a priority of the Department as a strong social safety net will ensure all West Australians can benefit from the booming economy.
The Department will be a focal point for initiatives and policies across Government that build and support strong, sustainable communities.
The name and the structure may have changed, but our focus continues to be on connecting communities.
